Dusty Shaffer, PAHL V P of Discipline for 15 years, from 1995 to 2010, passed away this week from a heart attack.  Dusty served the PAHL tirelessly in the sport that he loved, and for the players that he was passionate about.  He was a friend and a leader.  He was a gentle man that held us all to a higher standard.

Heads Up Pittsburgh Youth Hockey Baseline Concussion Testing

Attention PAHL Parents:

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine are teaming up on a first-of-its-kind initiative - "Heads Up Pittsburgh" - to offer free ImPACT baseline concussion testing and educational programs to youth hockey players in the Pittsburgh region. The program is funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

The tests are conducted through the UPMC Sports Concussion Program, a credentialed ImPACT testing partner. They use a 30-minute test that evaluates and documents multiple aspects of neurocognitive functioning -- including memory, brain processing speed, reaction time, post-concussive symptoms and an injury-documentation system. All NHL players undergo such a test. The baseline test is then used for a comparison if a player suffers a concussion and to help inform return to play decisions made by health care professionals. Educational materials are provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The tests are being conducted at the UPMC Sports Medicine Center on the South Side and at any of five Community College of Allegheny County locations - Allegheny, Boyce, North and South campuses and West Hills Center. Up to 20 players can be tested at the same time.

Here are the details:
  • The free baseline testing is for registered USA Hockey participants starting in the Pee Wee division (12 & under) through High School (18 & under)
  • Log on to www.upmc.com/hockeytesting to pre-register at one of the locations for your baseline test
  • Enter Password: upmcheadsup
  • Enter Your USA Hockey confirmation number for either the 10-11 or 11-12 season. If you don't know your number you can access it at www.usahockeyregistration.com , click on 'Request Duplicate Registration Confirmation' or contact USA Hockey at 1-800-566-3288 ext 123
  • Our goal is to baseline test all players by the beginning of the 2011-2012 season. Registrations will fill quickly, there are a total of seven sites for testing. Testing will continue through the summer.
  • At each testing center UPMC staff will be on hand to discuss, answer questions and educate parents on concussions while their children take the test
  • Educational packages are available for coaches, players and parents.

If you have questions or concerns contact the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com
