HISTORY

The Morgantown Hockey Association formed when the Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena opened in 1979, giving the league a second team outside of Pennsylvania and the second youth program to join the league from West Virginia.

The Morgantown rink -- which was a community rink that later became known simply as the Morgantown Ice Arena -- saw several necessary upgrades over the years, enhancing a facility that originally was not entirely enclosed, had just two locker rooms, and infamously featured two-tier benches.  The arena finally became fully enclosed inside of 4 walls in the mid-1990s, and new boards (with single-row benches) were installed in the early 2000s.  But the venue still lagged behind, particularly with its locker room accommodations and lack of adequate spectator seating.  Proposals were introduced in the late 2010s to perform a large overhaul of the arena, and various ideas were discussed for several years.  Ultimately, the community rink would get more improvements, but those changes concentrated on providing skating programs for the public.  The hockey focus shifted to a new facility built in nearby Mylan Park, a large collection of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities run by a non-profit organization.  After years of hoping for a better home, construction went quickly on the Mylan Park Ice Rink, which opened its doors in September 2025 as the Hope Gas Ice Pavilion.

The Blades annually field several co-ed teams and girls programs in PAHL, consistently providing youth hockey opportunities in the Morgantown area for the past 50+ years.  Those PAHL teams are a part of a larger organization that concurrently operates the local scholastic teams in Morgantown, jointly promoting and strengthening hockey in Northern West Virginia.
