Game Scoring

SHOTS ON GOAL

A shot on goal is formally defined as a puck propelled by an opposing player at the net which would have been a goal (or was a goal) except it was stopped only by the goaltender.  All of the following apply therein for the nuances of that definition:

  • A goal scored is a shot on goal, regardless of how it reached the net.
  • An attempt that misses the net is not a shot on goal.
  • An attempt that hits a post/crossbar is not a shot on goal.
  • An attempt that is stopped/blocked by anyone prior to reaching the goaltender is not a shot on goal.
  • A pass across the crease that is blocked by the goaltender is not a shot on goal because the puck would not have gone in the net otherwise.
  • A puck that slides to the goaltender after a player loses control of it is not a shot on goal since the player did not propel the puck at the net.
  • A puck that goes on net from outside the attacking zone is only a shot if the shooter was propelling the puck at the net from the neutral zone.
  • A flip/dump shot into the zone, a clearing attempt from the far end, or a puck that first banks off the boards are not considered to be shots on goal, even if the puck ends up going at the goal mouth before being played by the goaltender.

DENOTING SUSPENSIONS

Please mark all individuals serving a suspension in a game on the scoresheet by crossing off the suspended individual with a single, thin line and denoting "SUSP" next to the player's name.  The individual's name must remain recognizable surrounding the line for identification purposes.

  • For PAHL scoresheets, the "SUSP" should be written only in the NOTES column for players and immediately under the name for coaches.
  • For USAH scoresheets, the "SUSP" should be written immediately adjacent to the individual's name name (players and coaches) on the roster.

The "SUSP" can optionally include an ordinal number after it to help track game number of a multiple-game suspension.  Example: "SUSP 2" for the 2nd game of a 2+ game suspension.

No other notes should be added anywhere else to the scoresheet regarding suspensions, including writing additional information in the margins or describing the reason for the suspension or citing the full length of the suspension.
